Individual letter
Number Plate Letter A
The most-used letter on UK plates, and the one most trade orders run short of first.
A is the opening letter of the Anglia memory tags issued through Peterborough, Norwich and Ipswich, and it is also one of the most frequently drawn letters in the random three-letter group. If you keep one character in deeper stock than any other, make it A.

Where the A appears on UK plates
- Area codes beginning with A were issued across Anglia — Peterborough, Norwich and Ipswich.
- A appears freely in the final three letters of any registration, in any region.
- Double and triple A runs are common, so a single registration can need three or more of this character per plate.
Ordering and fitting the A
- The closed triangle of the A leaves a thin bridge across the middle; press it down from the centre outwards so the crossbar seats flat.
- Because it repeats so often, count A per plate rather than per registration — our registration calculator does this for you.
Questions about the A
- How many A characters should I keep in stock?
- In our own stock planning A sits in the top group alongside the other high-frequency letters. The reorder screen in your own records is the better guide, but A is rarely over-ordered.
- Is the A the same height as the digits?
- Yes. Every character in a range is cut or moulded to the same character height, so letters and digits line up on the same plate.
