Individual letter
Number Plate Letter I
Not issued on modern UK registrations — stocked for older and bespoke work.
The DVLA does not use I in current registration marks, precisely because it is too easily read as the digit 1. We still list it for restoration work, pre-2001 marks and display use, but it is not a character you will need for a standard replacement plate, so we hold it in shallow stock.

Where the I appears on UK plates
- I is not used in the memory tag or in the random three letters of the current format.
- It can appear on older registration styles and on bespoke or display work.
Ordering and fitting the I
- If a customer reads an I off a photograph, it is almost always the digit 1 — check before ordering.
- Held in shallow stock; tell us early if you need a larger quantity.
Questions about the I
- Why is I not on modern plates?
- It is excluded from the current format to avoid confusion with the digit 1.
- Should I order I or 1?
- For any registration issued since 2001, order the digit 1. We supply exactly the character ordered and do not substitute one for the other.
